Fly over Okavango Delta

Okavango Delta on mid-August, just about three months into the dry season. Lush green turns into yellowish brown, water has receded in many places. Animals searching for food, along with termite mounts dotted the land.

Namibia Camping Experience

We had four camping nights in Namibia. Two in the famous Etosha National Park and two in the deep desert area. Tour company provided the tents and sleeping pad, I setup the tent myself with my own sleeping bag. My experience with the camping was very good, even they were in the middle of nowhere or in the desert.

Elephant Sands Lodge in Kalahari Desert

Third day in Southern Africa in Botswana, traveled long bus ride on a major highway with hardly any traffic or structures along the way. Before reaching the lodge, our tour guide showed us a drawing of the location, repeatedly warned to stay on the designated trail, not to step out into elephants' path. This area is in the Kalahari Desert, now is the middle of dry season, water is getting scarce. The elephants would visit water holes everyday, and if they don't find water, they would make a lot of fuss searching for it and damage the lodge property. So the locals would put together some money to pay for pumping water to the water holes.

The Puffins of Skellig Michael Island, Ireland

Skellig Michael is the larger of the two Skellig Islands, located 12 kilometers west of Portmagee and Valentia Island, on the west coast of Ireland. At some angle, it looks like a pyramid standing in the ocean horizon. Hundreds of years ago, Christian monks lived here, built several beehive stone huts at the top of the hill. The ruin made it a World Heritage site. On 2016, Star War movie The Last Jedi was filmed here, the beehives became iconic for fans all over the world.

瓦哈卡的亡靈節 Day of the Dead in Oaxaca

墨西哥的亡靈節和美國的萬聖節同在十月底（亡靈節是十月三十一日到十一月二日), 但是亡靈節沒有恐怖的氣氛，倒比較像是中國的清明節，是掃墓的日子，也是期待與死者相會的日子。

Puebla 的壁畫 Murals of Puebla

蒐尋Puebla, Mexico的景點，只有二個網頁提及壁畫。是2011 年的計劃，要以集體創作提升社區意識，也希望住户可以因此而有些額外收入。地區離市中心Zocalo 並不遠。一早按圖索驥，很快就找到入口的街。街口一幅大畫。反過身來，是五幅少女的臉。以後沿街一幅接一幅，簡直難找到一面空白的牆。

在瓦哈卡見到很多黑白畫。這些畫面反覆出現在街邊牆上。仔細看，是印在薄紙上的版畫。想來是便於大量製造，快速貼上，避免警察攻擊。最常見的是小幅的”桑地牙哥到那裡去了”。我出發前依稀記得有個年輕人在南美因為抗議而失踪。蒐尋一下，果真就是這位聳然英俊的黒髮青年。U2 搖滾巨星Bono 可以當面向阿根廷總統詢問，（得到的也是推拖的回應，）小民就只能偷偷在街上問，你們把桑地牙哥怎麼了？

原住民悲情，武裝警察壓制，腐敗的政府，都是題材。

大昭寺外見識藏民的虔誠

第一次生念要去西藏是多年前看到藏民做大禮拜朝聖的照片，感動於他們信仰之虔誠和生活之簡單, 兩件事都是我做不到的。到了拉薩迫不急待要去大昭寺，不等導遊帶領，趕在調適高反的日子就走過去。

色拉寺辯經

色拉寺有名的是每天下午三點到五點的辯經。我們從哲蚌寺出來，在寺外吃個午餐, 信步走進寺裡看了一下，就到了辯經時刻。只見年輕僧人紛紛帶著黃色僧帽，趕向辯經場。（這是韋小寶所謂的番僧吧?)

終於吃到糌粑

一直對糌粑很好奇。西藏人吃糌粑，喝酥油茶和青稞酒，完全不知道是什麼，起碼總要試一下。

第一天早餐在旅館吃自助餐, 在中式西式水果麪條之中，看到有個糌粑的牌子，可是附近完全沒有什麼成品。走了一回，再一回，最後只好厚著臉皮問，糌粑在那裡呀？答案是要自己把青稞粉拌酥油，糖，和奶渣一起和成的。看著我這大嬸還是一臉迷惑相，服務員就說，我幫你和吧。感謝感謝。先吃點別的吧。然而等了好一會兒，還沒見到，只好走去查看。這下子注意到，那和糌粑的可是位藏人，那麼一定道地的。他正努力地拿著小湯匙在和。又等了一下子才完成。吃起來不像任何食物的口感，如果真要形容，大概類似很結實的麥片團吧，但一點也不乾，口感很實在，今早不會肚子餓了。吃完了，又回到那牌子附近，把四種成分問了個清楚，再照張相留念。那時不知道，這是我在西藏吃到最好吃的糌粑。藏人是習慣用手去和的, 手的温度可以融化酥油和糖，和完了捏一小把就放嘴裡吃了。服務員當然只能用小匙幫我和，難怪弄了那麼久，可真是苦差事。

那天中午到八廓街舊區去午餐，叫了酥油茶，指明要鹹茶（而不是甜茶）。又叫了酸奶糌粑。鹹茶好喝，世界上大概沒幾種茶是鹹的吧。一大壺喝不完，真想帯著走。可惜沒有看到用傳統方式打酥油茶的了。糌粑上桌時還是熱的，但沒有那早餐的那麼有勁，少了奶渣的爽脆？ 以後又見到需要自和的藏式早餐，都是方便，以青稞粉，糖，和酥油茶去和成的。但我始終沒有自己試著合成過。

調適西藏的高原反應

計劃去西藏最大的障礙是高原反應。我因為每'高'必'反'，屢試不爽。唯一的例外是有二天的調適期，反應就沒那麼強烈。所以這次用三個方法試圖減輕症狀。

西湖殺鯽 Bleaching out the fish in West Lake

The famous tourist destination of West Lake was clearing the fish in the lotus pond with bleach ahead of its famous lotus season in the summer to prevent the fish damaging the new growth of the lotus buds. All the Night Herons in the neighborhood gathered here trying to snatch an easy meal.

走在白堤西邊盡頭，孤山附近，突見群鳥亂飛。走向動亂所在，只見多艘船在湖面撈東西，夜鷺群集荷花池邊上的分界線上。可以請楚地看見分界線內是渾白色，線外則是自然水色。一問旁邊長鏡頭的攝影人，原來是剛下了漂白粉殺魚，現正在撈已浮上水面半死或全死的魚, 和漂白粉袋。

Fruit Bats (Flying Fox) of Sri Lanka 斯里蘭卡的水果蝙蝠

斯里蘭卡的蝙蝠，又叫“飛狐”，集體倒掛大樹上。飛起來的造型和電影裡的蝙蝠俠真沒有兩樣。這是在Tissa Lake的東南角上看到的。

First I saw a few on the island of Maldives, then a few on one tree in Kandy around Kandy Lake. Then came the mother load of those fruit bats hanging from several big canopy trees at the southeast corner of Tissa Lake, about 100 meters from the Rain Tree Hotel we stayed. Many big birds like Grey Heron, Asian Darter, and Cormorant also shared the trees.

Yala 國家公園看豹

到斯里蘭卡的Yala 國家公園, 看豹是大家的第一志願。雖然很清楚野生動物自由走動，誰也無法說一定可以看到，否則去動物園看就好了。Safari 半天的行程太緊湊，為了増加機會，我和朋友選了全天。早上五點半出發，下午四點返回。(半天的十點半就折返了）Jeep 都是印度製造的，前面司機坐位較低，後面座位三排明顯地高，便利看動物。有車頂但完全沒窗。

Malabar Pied Hornbill in Yala National Park of Sri Lanka 斯里蓝卡的犀鸟

這群鳥在很遠的樹上，用望遠鏡才大概看出是犀鳥。因為很遠，想放棄不看了。導遊說等等，一隻鳥開始飛，整群都會跟進的。果然如此，大家紛紛飛到近處的樹上。其中兩隻在飛行中和在樹上都觸碰著大嘴。慢慢地，就像來時一樣，他們又漸漸飛離。這是我第一次在野外看到犀鳥，比在動物園裡看精彩多了。Our safari guide D spotted those Hornbills on the tree at the far end of the clearing. So far away I had to use binoculars to acknowledge they were indeed Malabar Pied Hornbills. D told us to wait, once one bird started to move, the rest will follow. He was right. One leave the group and flew toward us, slowly others follow. Even on the move, one pair touch beaks on the fly!

They arrived on the tree closer to us, still, the pair lock their beaks. After brief stop, the group started to move again. One by one, they leave us.

I tried to check the sex of those two kissers later when I had the bird book and internet access. My guess is they were both female, but can't confirm.

The magic mountain goats of Glacier NP

I wanted to see mountain goats badly. Visited Alaska twice, didn't get to see them, not even a tiny grain of white dots up on the mountain. Didn't see any in Canadian Rockies either. My last hope then was Glacier NP, where everyone got pictures of them. Search results showed Logan Pass is the best bet.

Ranger said they frequently spotted on Hidden Lake Trail. Just the trail we planned to hike. It was late June, most of the trail was still covered by snow after short walk on wooden walkway at the beginning. At some point slippery and narrow, but overall an easy and beautiful hike.

Point Reyes Service Trip 國家海岸除草記

紅頂的船屋，是我們住了八天的家

Joined Sierra Club Service Outing for the first time to remove invasive plants in Point Reyes National Seashore. Got to stay in the legendary Lifeboat House close to Chimney Rock. Facing Drakes Bay, with elephant seals and sea lions on the beach, it's a wildlife paradise and I was proud to do some service in our public land.

知道Sierra Club 的工作團service trip 好一陣子了，不時瀏覽有那些選擇，但是一直沒法提起勇氣參加。這種工作團到各處做短期工作，修屋，修hiking trail, 拔野草，或住宿，或露營，甚至有跋涉入山，露宿沙漠的。工作的地點大多是風景優美或地形特別的地方，當作主要吸引力。參與的人不但需自付旅費，還要付食宿等費用。

今年雨多，前後院除草多日，覺得對自己的除草本領有點信心，也稍微有些除草心得。想想倒可以參加一團在 Point Reyes National Seashore (以下簡稱PR) 清除外侵植物 invasive plants。那裡離家100 英哩，開車就成。最主要的是，八天裡住的地方是個歷史性的救難船屋，只供特別活動使用，不對外開放。所在的地點極佳，面對海灣 Drake's Bay, 後山步行就可到諾大園區裡首選地點Chimney Rock， 五月正好看野花。 這裡因為在國家公園內，二十幾英哩內沒有地方可住，費用不到六百美金，算是所有工作團裡最合理的。要當苦力這裡是方便又值得。決定報名的另一個原因是那時只剩下最後一個名額，再不行動就要等下一次了。

Santorini 的流浪犬

百萬背景 The million dollar background, all to himself

Recent photo of homeless dogs sleeping in a cafe in Lesbos, Greece reminded me of my dog encounter in Sentorini, Greece years ago. The homeless dogs with million-dollar view and decent treatment from the resident. 

最近看到希臘小島上一家咖啡店晚上收店之後讓流浪狗上椅子睡覺的照片，回想到多年前在Santorini 島上的 Oia 住了幾晚的遇狗經驗。

在Oia時我們住在傳統的洞屋裡，有貓成天來，一直來賴著不走。街上到處可見狗，看上去都很健康而且乾淨，一點都不像流浪犬。牆邊上時有狗碗，顯然有人餵食。可能因為是觀光區，即使是在路邊也都維持的清潔有序。狗兒們也不兇，也沒看到打架的，倒像是鄰居的狗互相認識一般。

Swimming With Sea Turtles in Kona, Big Island of Hawaii 在大島與海龜同游

三年前才遊大島（驚艷夏威夷大島），因為熟門熟路，從西岸直飛很方便。這次決定只去幾個地方，希望好好放鬆度假。在Kailua-Kona 留了兩天，都在浮潛。我們去的兩處都在路邊，停了車就可以下水，完全免費。買了兩年的水底相機這回真的努力使用。不只見到海龜，還在水中看牠們覓食，跟了好一陣子。其他熱帶魚更不在話下。（倒是珊瑚礁沒啥看頭。）我這旱鴨照例穿救生衣浮潛，保證要沉也沉不下，可以安心地享受神奇的水中世界。以下是英文詳情。

Revisit same place in three years is something unthinkable in our travel record, but we wanted to go back to the Big Island because we knew the place from last visit, this time just wanted to do few things and relax, no exploration needed. With direct flight from Oakland to Kailua-Kona, flying time to the west is much easier than to the east. The big plus is easy access to the free snorkeling sites we intended, no need to involve boat or tour operators.

誰判了小狐死刑？

去年在這附近第一次看見幾隻灰狐之後，就常來，也常見到。小狐們常是看到人來才從樹叢裡出來等，明顯的是有人在餵牠們。事隔多日，上個月再來時，居然有人進駐那叉路，一問之下，是野生動物的志工企圖阻止餵食行為。大家都知道是一位中國（不太老的）老人開始餵的。（年紀不太老，觀念很老。）因為可以靠近狐狸，所以照了些令人羨慕的照片。聽志工說，慢慢在網上傳開，來餵狐狸的人越來越多。有時為避人耳目，還很隱秘地偷偷邊走邊掉下狗豆之類的食物，總是吸引小狐出來。這位老人據說還被Ranger 開單，不知道罰則是什麽。但是即使Ranger 解釋給他聽（英文對中文，不知如何雞同鴨講），說狐狸若一直等待餵食，不去學捕獵的技術，冬天天氣不好，沒人餵食，就會餓死。老人還是覺得奇怪，為什麼不把牠們捉起來養，就不會餓死了。

這位志工的工作就是站在狐狸出沒的地方，監視企圖餵食的人，傳播對待野生動物的正確觀念。另外他的腰間帶了個喇叭和響笛，小狐走近來乞食就給他大聲地轟一下，希望能讓小狐 “unlearn” 人是不能靠近的。

我跟他說，要改變行為可能需要兩代 （two generations)。
“小狐狸兩代？” 他問。
“中國人兩代。” 我說。那些只看中文電視報紙的人們是沒法學到美國社會知識的，只能靠上學的年輕一代了。

他說Ranger 告訴他，今冬小狐們都活不下去。要知道灰狐是加州的土生狐狸，這一片野地上還有紅狐狸，是歐洲人到美洲是帶來的。這公園為了要保護原生動物，每年都獵殺紅狐，所以牠們不會和灰狐搶食物。這麽多的努力經營，人卻輕易的就破壞了。

和他談完話，我繼續走那條熟悉的小徑。短短的路上，看到四隻白尾兔子，是狐狸的食物吧。那麼多兔子，真的是狐狸不會獵食嗎？

一個月後，不期望會再看見灰狐。昨天不經意還看見這兩隻，都很小。其中一隻先走了，小隻的還戀戀不捨，走近來等。我只好把自己變得很大地努力把牠嚇走，算是盡一點我該做的吧。野生動物不容易看到，每次看到應該是驚喜，不是死的前兆。
