北海道的天鵝

出發前只在網上看到古丹溫泉旁邊有天鵝，因此只鎖定那一點。到達流冰鎮網走時看到附近的濤沸湖也有，正好順當日的行程去瞧一眼。在“白鳥公園野鳥觀察舍”的路口進去，果真有還沒結冰的河水供天鵝使用。野鳥觀察舍出奇的清潔，並提供望遠鏡和scope。附近顯然還有更多天鵝來去飛翔。

今夏的肥皂劇--魚鷹一家 Osprey Family

今夏一如往常，宅在家裡避暑。無意中發現一LiveCam網站，在各地設置攝影機，現場直播動物活動。剛開始看在北極圈內的Snowy Owl 的巢，養育六隻小owl。 因為攝影機離的太遠，巢又凹在地面之下，除了帶食物回來時小owl 站起來要東西吃，其他時間都看不到。只好轉台，看了Puffin所在的海岸和巢穴，最後鎖定到Osprey頻道。這鳥翻譯成“鶚”，或是魚鷹，觀察的結果，食物完全是魚，就在附近的水域捕的。難怪叫魚鷹。地點呢，也在大陸的另一頭，東北角的緬因州。

Klamath Basin National Wildlife Refuges

離開Crater Lake 國家公園，時間上不允許往北去Bend， 只好到緊鄰的Klamath Basin National Wildlife Refuges 一路往南回家的方向開。這個NWR Complex 很大，橫跨了俄勒岡州和加州，是好幾個refuge合成的。網上的賞鳥路線一共標了47個地方，花了好一陣子才決定去那幾個點。一路上這裡那裡的，總是看見白雪覆蓋的錐形火山。

自從幾年前到Sacramental Wildlife Refuge 看避冬的野雁野鴨，驚艷到數大的震撼，以後每一兩年總要去駭一次。平常在家附近見到加拿大雁邊飛邊叫，呼朋引伴，即使只有兩隻，總也忍不住微笑目送到天際。（古人說的那種被狐狸精迷住了，大概就是這種情形吧。）

Revisited Año Nuevo , the largest elephant seal colony of United State mainland.  Every year from December to March of next year, they form rookery along California coast, from Point Rye to Baja California. Plenty of information on the web:

百年前沒有電燈時，用脂肪來做燈油，海象因為脂肪層很厚，被大量獵殺。1922年美國和墨西哥立法禁獵時，只剩下一百頭海象。要一直等到1950年以後，小海象才在加州的Año Nuevo出生。經過多年的保育，現在的海象數目算是不錯了。

Wildlife Refuges for Migrating Birds in Bay Area

Don't remember how I got the information about the Sacramento Wildlife Refuge, but in 2009 we decided to pay a visit. After paying the entrance fee at the visitor center, suddenly I heard some noise that's not familiar in daily life, a noise of many many birds, while there was not a single bird in sight around the center.

The magic unfolded in the 6 miles auto tour around the Refuge.  Forgive me for not be able to describe the scene of thousands of birds gathering in one place.  (Watch the video at the end of this page and feel it.)  I kept on saying "Holy *&^%" that day, which just reflected how I felt.  All the birds simply moving from one pond to another in big number while talking to each other, somehow the process alone pleased me to no end.

我從天使的領地裡回來--墨西哥看帝王蝴蝶遷徙 I Came Back From The World of Angels

在電視節目上看到帝王蝴蝶從北美的美、加遷徙到墨西哥和中美洲去避冬的過程，感到很不可思議。那麼小而弱的生物可以飛到那麼遠的地方去，又能不約而同的聚集在幾個特別的地方！我曾經到北加的Monterey試圖去找在那裡過冬的蝴蝶，結果是一隻也沒見到。後來才知道牠們都棲息在高樹上，冬天天寒，要到中午以後氣溫升高了才飛得動，一大早去當然看不見。後來找到牠們在墨西哥棲息的地方，覺得很難去，我的西班牙文只有兩三句，要自助到那裡可能有嚴重困難。磨蹭了幾年，看到加拿大小團旅遊公司G Adventures 有出特別團在二月去看帝王蝴蝶遷徙，因為時間不長，所以也不太貴，就決定跟了。
